How To Start The Habit Of Journaling?

Go to My Free Wellness Tools and Get my Free Journaling Prompt!

Journaling is by far one of the most effective #selfreflection tools I have ever practiced in my life!

It's like a having a bestfriend that gets you, listens to you and always have the best insight and advice to give. It's awesome!!

Journaling can be used as a tool to highlight all the good things that have happened during the day, it can be used a tool to make sense of our own thoughts. Journaling can also be used as a tool of release; when the mind gets super foggy with ideas, journaling can sooth the stress and clarify the mind.

There is a magical power with using a pen/ pencil and a piece of paper for the sake of writing down your thoughts.

Research has shown great benefits for practicing the habit of journaling, let’s name a few:

~BETTER #SELFKNOWLEDGE

The more you take time to reflect on your thoughts, the more you know what’s going on, on the inside, and the more your internal world will stop being a mystery and becomes familiar territory.

~DEEPER #SELFCONNECTION

The more you allow yourself to sit in silence to journal, the better awareness you will have of yourself and the easier it will become for you to spend time with YOU.

~CLEARER VIEW OF THE WORLD

Journaling helps us look at our life more objectively. With it we will look at our daily challenges, opportunities and situations from a neutral point of view and will no longer be taken away with the subjectivity of our emotional impulses.

~REDUCED STRESS LEVELS

#Stress happens when we are overwhelmed by life, by our thoughts, our emotions or maybe by all of them! The art of writing is a soothing one; whenever we journal, we connect to a quiet place within ourselves, we swim beyond the waves into the stillness of the ocean water, that place in our mind where time slows down and #awareness is at its peak.

These are just to name a few of the many other benefits #journaling can have on the quality of the life we live.

But let’s dive in and solve the mystery of starting a consistent and joyous journaling habit.

Your first question to yourself is ought to be:

Why do I want this habit to begin with?

This question will lead to high insight to where you are now in your life, what you mostly need at this moment in your journey and it will just push you towards honesty with yourself and your current desires and needs.

I desire more clarity, I want more connection with myself, I long for peace of mind… whatever it is, this answer is way more than just motivation to your journaling habit, this (for now) is your goal and your priority.

What is pushing you to desire this habit is what you deeply need in your life now in order to move closer to how you want to be experiencing and living your everyday life.

Your journal will be your safe haven, that place you go to be and express your truest self, your journal is a space of love and no judgement.

So, let’s begin:

My Journal <3 "Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful"

1) THE FIRST STEP IS GO AND GET YOURSELF A BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRING JOURNAL

Let your journal be an expression of who you are!

2) DECIDE ON A SPECIFIC TIME EVERY DAY TO DO YOUR JOURNALING PRACTICE

This will help in training your brain to build this new habit and step by step reprogram your subconscious mind to get used to this and make it the new norm. I usually love to journal first thing when I wake up and last thing before I go to bed.

3) AN EASY WAY TO START THIS HABIT IS BY HAVING STRUCTURE

It can be scary for someone who has never journaled to look at an empty piece of paper and expect to know what to do. (but that’s why I am here to help you get a simple, easy structure that will get this party going)

4) NOW THAT YOU HAVE STRUCTURE, LET'S GET STARTED

  • Start by writing down how you feel in this moment

This will help you start your day mindfully and build awareness of your thoughts and their accompanying emotions.

  • Write down three to five things you are grateful for in your life

It can be something so small; like the comfort of your bed or something so big; like the health of your loved ones. Starting your day with gratitude is by far the best gift you can give yourself.

Gratitude increases the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain helping us feel good and alive, it also make us more recpetive to recieve more of what we are grateful for in our lives. (I will release a new How To article for Practicing Gratitude... Stay Tuned!)

  • Write down three energies you would like to bring to your day

Think of it as your intention for the day to come. Writing this down will help you be more intentional and less random in the way you live each day.

Sometimes you really need simplicity, love and joy to remember the small joys in life. On other days you might need focus, clarity and energy to get your work done. (make sure you connect to what you really desire for the day and let this come from the heart)

  • Write down three ways you expect to bring these energies into your day

If you want more clarity, focus and energy, then maybe you want to put your phone on airplane mode, plan or schedule your day before you start, work on only two projects for the entire day. (keep it simple and doable)

  • Write down your three top priorities for the day

These are the things that if you finish and finish only these three, you will go to bed a happy person. Our schedules can be overwhelming sometimes and having our priorities cleared out helps us keep focus on what truly matters for us and for our progress.

5) Lastly, before going to bed grab your journal and write down three good things that happened to you during the day

It's easy to fall into the trap of "I had a bad day". Well, this right here will help you remember and reflect on all the good things that happened with you each day.

I mean how blessed are we if we can find three good things each and every day!

Reflecting on all the good that happened in your day will help you stay grateful for all the blessings you have in your life. It will also train your brain to focus on the positive, see opportunities instead of problems, blessings instead of mishaps, abundance instead of lack.

What you focus on expands so stay aware of what you give your attention to.

Now, my friend you have your journal ready for you to begin this beautiful journey back to yourself.
